Mercedes Simplex 1904 TL 10

Back at the dawn of motoring, when cars were smoky, noisy, mysterious, and wondrous contrivances of brass, wood, iron steel and rubber, and a trip to market wasn't just an errand-it was an adventure-the Daimler Motor Company began making cars. In 1899, they produced the first Mercedes car (named after the daughter of Mr. Daimler's friend, Emil Jellinek). In 1904 they introduced the Simplex. Of course, "simple" meant five pedals, a spark advance, throttle lever, outside mounted brake lever and numerous switches, valves and handles to occupy the driver's attention. By the way, there was no windshield. Simple would be a good way to describe the 1:24 scale die cast model by FM. Yet, like FM's 1907 Rolls-Royce, this early model has a surprising amount of fine detail-so necessary on early automobile models. The front wheels steer and the hood opens to reveal the odd-looking engine with a decent amount of detailing. The finish is done in glossy beige with beautifully applied, fine pinstriping. Simulated wood-spoke wheels, bright red undercarriage parts, soft, leather-look seats, and lots of simulated brass-finished parts complete the package. If you're any kind of a vintage car buff, don't let the dearth of gee-whiz features stop you from adding this fine example of turn-of-the-century automotive innovation to your collection. It'll look sharp on the shelf with its cousins.
