Ford 1956, Thunderbird Convertible- Crystal B14PY45
Give FM ample credit for manufacturing diversity and for their use of so many various forms of materials in constructing 1:24th scale models. There is the obvious, diecast, clearcast, fiberglass, fine pewter and what I chronicle here, a 1956 Baby Bird in crystal with gold accents. This particular gem-like sparkler has long since been discontinued but FM worked in crystal for a large number of collectible pieces. Relatively few of these, however, were made as 1:24th scale automotive recreations. Franklin Mint has informed me that they made few crystal automobiles. This Thunderbird was one, a 1957 Corvette, a 1954 Mercedes-Benz Gullwing, and a 1957 Chevy Bel Air Coupe. This, the 1956 T-Bird, was their only crystal Ford. The crystal Thunderbird was designed by Rhys Miller for the Franklin Mint. This particular piece was accompanied by a standard Gregory T. Scally, “Dear Collector” letter and a separate commentary on the 1:1 1956 T-Bird calling it a "Dreambird". Also part of the presentation was a certificate of authentication. The piece itself is a hollowed out relief in crystal of the overall image of the small T-bird. Front, back, top and sides are relatively uniform and follow the style lines of the car but the underneath portion of the unit is hollow. This actually allows for multiple surface facets of the sculpture from which to reflect light causing a dazzling presentation in certain lighting situations. The interior and seats are formed in frosted crystal as are the wheels and tires and simulated engine, a V8, as seen through the crystal clear hood from above. The front and rear bumpers, steering wheel and removable top are all cloaked in 24 karat gold electroplate. A small, almost imperceptible sticker is affixed on the driver’s read quarter panel exclaiming the collectible to be, “Made in Germany”. This was not a limited edition item but there may be no way of knowing just how many or few of these pieces were actually produced. Further research has told me that these crystal images were made around 1989 and 1990. But if you are like me, and like the Baby Bird image, you better start the search as these do not seem to appear too often on the secondary market. This piece sold for $250 or in 5 interest-free payments of $50. Original part number: B14PY45
